October 2022 Blog Help me out! What did you call your grandmother?

October 2022 Blog

There’s a celebration about to happen.

And I need your advice… on how to be a grand mother.

The beginning of the next generation…

Expanding who we’re caretakers of

Using the  history of our elders

Putting our spin on the narrative…

Wholeheartedly

With grace

Humbled

And filled with gratitude.

What is your grandmother story?

Did you have one who told you stories, or soothed you through crises?

Do you remember going to your grandmother’s home?

What are the memories that are awakened?

Both of my grandmothers died before I was born. I sought out grandmother role models.

Several of the women on my street filled the bill.

I remember Mrs. Schill with her cookie jar always filled with chocolate chip cookies that was next to a jar of Jergen’s Cherry Almond lotion. The smells are intermingled in my mind.

Mrs. Davis’ house had a particular museum-like quality.

Everything was always in place and she always seemed glad to see me when I knocked on the door for a visit.

Now that grandmotherhood is upon me, I am turning to my sisters for advice.

What would be your suggestions that would help pave the way into this next amazingly beautiful stage of my life?

What have your experiences been with your grandmother, or as a nana to your own children’s children?

Do/did you share times together outdoors? Sharing stories?

How do you make time in your busy lives for these precious and fleeting times?

I’d love to hear ways that you have stepped into grandmotherhood.

As sisters, we’ve helped each other through major stepping stones throughout our lives.

What would I have done without my Sisters, Playgroup Moms, Full Moon sisters, or Moms of my kids’ friends?

Evolutionarily, women may live longer to help raise the upcoming generation.

Children with engaged grandmothers have been shown to have better academic, social and physical outcomes.

I’ve never done this before. Sister to sister, what are your words of wisdom?

I’m turning to my sweet sisters to hear stories about your experiences of either being with your grandmothers, or being one in your family. It’s primordial, this amazing transition, the passing of the wand. There’s no other experience like it, or so I’ve heard.

What are your favorite parts? What should I look out for?

Becoming a grandmother has rich freedoms and responsibilities.

I will have time to devote to helping explain the ways of the world without all of the pressures that are inherent in raising children.

Re-membering, or placing the many parts of our families’ lives together in my own point of view, is an important role, and one I’ve earned through the years.

I can’t wait to discover walk in nature together, and discuss, with the children, their insights on their world.

So many teachable moments. It was true when our three children were young.

These three amazing kids were, and now with their partners continue to be, my teachers.

Imagine ~  the next generation of this conversation ~

Who were your teachers? Your children? Nieces or nephews? Friends’ kids?

Let me ask you, when was the last time you did something for the first time?

The first time someone said this to me, I was getting ready to run a Tough Mudder with Kelsey.

I’m excited to be part of the support team. Now, she’s the tough mother.

I’d LOVE to hear any and all ideas or suggestions πŸ’žπŸŒΊπŸ’ž

Big love,

Kathy (aka Gigi K)
